R3

Case IH R3 – EHR Control Unit: EHR Control Unit 3 Lever Not Calibrated

Issue description

The Electronic Hydraulic Remote (EHR) system does not have valid calibration data for the #3 remote control lever. This typically happens if the non-volatile memory in the controller has been reset, if a mechanical or electrical repair was just performed, or if the lever's potentiometer has failed or drifted out of range.

Applies to these machines

  • MXM
  • MXM 120
  • MXM 130
  • MXM 140
  • MXM 155
  • MXM 175
  • MXM 190
  • TM120
  • TM130
  • TM140
  • TM155
  • TM175
  • TM190

Check the cause

  1. Check for associated codes F24, E24, or 24 (indicating Transmission/EDC calibration required) and R31 through R38 (indicating a hard electrical fault in the #3 valve or lever circuit).

  2. Verify if the microprocessor, a PWM solenoid valve, or a potentiometer was recently replaced, as this will automatically trigger the need for calibration.

  3. Use the tractor's 'H-Menu' (specifically the H5 Switch Test mode) to verify that the EHR lever switches and potentiometers are registering inputs on the instrument cluster.

  4. Test the wiring harness from the cab controls to the EHR controller, and from the controller to the remote valves, looking for chafing or disconnected plugs.

Repair steps

  1. Preparation

Lower all equipment to the ground. Place all shift levers in neutral. Block the front and rear wheels.

  2. Enter Calibration Mode

Press and hold the High and Low range buttons and start the engine. 'CAL' will appear in the transmission display. Release the buttons.

  3. Set Engine Speed

Adjust the engine speed to 1200 ERPM.

  4. Navigate to EHR Calibration

Use the menu to navigate to the 'H1' calibration mode.

  5. Calibrate the Lever

Follow the on-screen prompts on the Electronic Instrument Cluster. You will be required to move the #3 EHR lever through its full range of motion (e.g., into the raise detent, lower, and float positions).

  6. Completion

The display will show numbers increasing during the calibration process. Hold the required buttons/levers until 'END' displays, signifying completion.

  7. Replace Faulty Components

If the calibration fails to complete or the code immediately returns, the lever assembly or its internal potentiometer is faulty and must be replaced, followed by a repeat of this calibration procedure.
