Case IH R35 – EHR (Electronic Hitch/Hydraulic Remote) Control Unit / Central Controller (XCM): Valve 3 Spool Travel Short Or Spool Travel Excessive Or Open Centre Not Reached
Issue description
This code indicates a mechanical or sensor failure within the #3 Electro-Hydraulic Remote (EHR) valve slice. The internal spool is failing to reach its commanded position, traveling too far, or failing to return to the neutral (open center) position. This is typically caused by mechanical binding of the spool inside the valve body, a failed internal position transducer, or internal contamination preventing full spool travel.
Applies to these machines
4 machines- MXM
- Case IH MXM Series (120, 130, 140, 155, 175, 190)
- Case IH Maxxum Series (100, 110, 115, 120, 125, 130, 140)
- Case IH Puma Series (115, 125, 140, 150, 155, 165, 175)
Check the cause
Check for companion codes (R34, R37, or R38). If present, the issue may be wiring or the in-cab controller rather than the valve itself.
Perform a wiring harness swap test by swapping the electrical connector from Valve 3 to an adjacent valve (like Valve 2 or 4). If the fault code changes to R25 or R45, the issue is internal to the Valve 3 assembly. If the code remains R35, the issue is in the tractor's wiring harness or XCM controller.
Attempt to recalibrate the EHR valves via the Digital Instrument Cluster (DIC) H-Menu. If the valve has minor wear, a recalibration might teach the controller the new travel limits.
Repair steps
Depressurize the System
Lower all implements to the ground, turn off the engine, and cycle the remote levers/buttons to relieve all hydraulic pressure.
Disconnect Electrical & Hydraulics
Disconnect the CAN/power electrical harness from the EHR Valve 3 slice. Disconnect and cap the hydraulic lines routed to that specific remote.
Disassemble the Valve Stack
Remove the retaining nuts on the tie rods that hold the remote valve stack together.
Remove the Faulty Valve
Carefully slide the Valve 3 slice out of the stack.
Prep the New Valve
Clean the mating surfaces of the adjacent valves. Install brand new O-rings between the valve slices to prevent internal high-pressure leaks.
Reassembly
Insert the new EHR valve slice, reinstall the tie rods, and torque them to the OEM specification found in your specific model's service manual.
Reconnect
Reattach the hydraulic lines and plug in the electrical harness.
Mandatory Calibration
Start the tractor and use the H-Menu to perform the EHR valve calibration procedure. The central controller must learn the spool travel limits of the new valve before it will operate.
