Case IH R38 – Armrest Controller: EHR Control Unit 3 Lever Faulty
Issue description
This fault code indicates a failure or out-of-range signal from the potentiometer inside the lever that controls the #3 Electronic Hydraulic Remote (EHR) valve. The system detects that the lever's position cannot be accurately read, which will typically lock out the hydraulic functions for that specific remote valve to prevent unintended operation.
Applies to these machines

- MXM 120
- MXM 130
- MXM 140
- MXM 155
- MXM 175
- MXM 190
- Magnum Series
- Steiger Series
- TM Series
Check the cause
Access the 'H5' menu (Switch Test) on the instrument cluster to verify if the #3 lever potentiometer is registering any movement or if it is completely dead.
Test the wiring harness from the armrest controls to the controller for continuity, shorts, or open circuits.
Run the 'H8' routine to clear the non-volatile memory (EEPROM). This resets stored fault codes and ensures you aren't chasing an old, inactive code.
Attempt to recalibrate the remote valves. If the lever will not follow the calibration command or fails to complete the sequence, the internal potentiometer has failed.
Repair steps
Power down the tractor and disconnect the battery.
Ensure the machine is fully powered off before beginning disassembly.
Disassemble the armrest console casing to access the EHR lever modules.
Remove the necessary covers to expose the internal lever assemblies.
Disconnect the electrical connector for the #3 remote lever.
Carefully unplug the harness from the faulty lever module.
Remove the retaining hardware and extract the faulty lever assembly.
Take out the old lever module (the potentiometer is generally not serviced separately).
Install the new lever assembly, secure it, and reconnect the wiring harness.
Mount the replacement lever and plug the electrical connector back in.
Reassemble the armrest console and reconnect the battery.
Put the console casing back together and restore power to the tractor.
Perform the Electro-Hydraulic Remote Valve Lever Calibration.
Enter the calibration mode on the instrument cluster. Set the flow control dial for the #3 valve to the maximum flow position. Pull the lever back from the neutral position to the 'extend' (raise) position and hold it. While holding the lever, press and release the timer switch three times in quick succession to activate the calibration. Wait for the display to confirm calibration is complete.
