Case IH R4 – EHR Control Unit: EHR Control Unit 4 Lever Not Calibrated

Issue description

The electronic controller does not have a valid, saved calibration range for the 4th Electronic Hydraulic Remote (EHR) lever. The system cannot accurately determine the lever's physical position (Raise, Lower, Float, or Neutral) because the minimum, maximum, or center voltage values from the lever's potentiometer are missing or out of the expected range.

Check the cause

  1. Ensure the #4 remote lever moves smoothly through its full range of motion and springs back to the exact center (neutral) position without sticking.

  2. Access the tractor's H-Menu (H5 Switch Test on MXM/TM models) to observe the live readings of the lever. Watch for erratic voltage jumps or dead spots as you sweep the lever.

  3. Inspect the wiring harness and connectors between the armrest lever assembly and the EHR controller for loose pins, corrosion, or rodent damage.

  4. Verify neutral baseline: If the tractor's A-post display tells you to 'move EHR to neutral' when the lever is already physically centered, the lever's internal potentiometer is likely failing.

Repair steps

  1. Enter Calibration Mode

    Enter the tractor's calibration mode. On many models, this is done by holding the 'Prog' (Program) key on the A-post while turning the ignition key to the 'ON' position.

  2. Select Valve/Lever 4 Calibration

    Navigate through the menu to the 'ARM' (Armrest) or EHR calibration section and select the calibration for Valve/Lever 4.

  3. Perform Calibration Sweep

    Follow the on-screen prompts: typically, you will be required to pull the lever fully back into the raise detent, push it fully forward into the lower/float position, and then allow it to return to neutral.

  4. Save Calibration Values

    Turn the ignition key OFF and wait at least 30 seconds before restarting the tractor. This allows the controller to save the new calibration values to its non-volatile memory.

  5. Disassemble Armrest Console

    If the calibration procedure will not complete, or if the R4 code returns immediately because the lever cannot hold its neutral baseline, disassemble the armrest console to access the EHR lever bank.

  6. Replace EHR Lever Assembly

    Replace the faulty #4 EHR lever assembly.

  7. Recalibrate New Lever

    After installing the new lever, you must perform the calibration procedure outlined in Step 1 so the EHR control unit can learn the new potentiometer's specific voltage sweep. (Note: On certain newer or highly specific models, a Case IH EST laptop or a special dealer calibration cable plugged into the diagnostic port may be required to force the calibration).
