R44

Case IH R44 – EHR (Electronic Hitch/Remote) Control Unit: Valve 4 Supply Under Voltage/Over Voltage Or Output Stage Faulty Or Transducer Faulty Or Spool Neutral Error Or Spool Not Neutral Error

Issue description

This indicates a failure in the 4th Electro-Hydraulic Remote (EHR) valve circuit. The system has detected that the voltage supplied to the valve is out of range, the electronic output stage/pilot head has failed, the position transducer is sending incorrect data, or the internal hydraulic spool is mechanically failing to return to its neutral, centered position.

Applies to these machines

  • MXM
  • MXM 120
  • MXM 130
  • MXM 140
  • MXM 155
  • MXM 175
  • MXM 190
  • Maxxum
  • Puma
  • Steiger
  • Quadtrac

Check the cause

  1. Test the tractor's system voltage to rule out a general over/under voltage condition.

  2. Inspect the wiring harness from the cab controls to the EHR controller, and from the controller to the remote valves, looking for shorts or open circuits.

  3. Access the tractor's onboard diagnostic H-Menu (menu H5) to verify that the physical switches/levers in the cab are functioning and sending the correct signals.

  4. Navigate to menu H1 to attempt a manual calibration of the remote valves. If the valve spool is mechanically stuck, the calibration will fail to complete.

  5. Swap the electronic pilot head from Valve 4 with a known working valve (e.g., Valve 3). If the fault code changes to R34, the electronic pilot head is faulty. If the code remains R44, the mechanical spool inside Valve 4 is likely binding.

Repair steps

  1. Preparation

Disconnect the tractor's battery to prevent electrical shorts. Thoroughly clean the rear hydraulic valve stack to prevent dirt from contaminating the hydraulic system.

  2. Wiring Repair

If harness testing revealed a fault, repair the damaged wiring or replace the corroded connector pins at the EHR controller or the valve itself.

  3. Pilot Head Replacement

If the diagnostic isolation test pointed to the electronic module (pilot head), unbolt the faulty pilot head from the top of Valve 4 and install a replacement unit.

  4. Valve Replacement

If the spool is mechanically stuck (failing to reach neutral) and cannot be freed, the entire remote valve slice must be replaced. Unbolt the tie-rods holding the hydraulic valve stack together, remove the faulty Valve 4 section, and insert the new replacement valve.

  5. Reassembly

Torque the valve stack tie-rods to factory specifications and reconnect all hydraulic lines and electrical harnesses.

  6. Recalibration

Reconnect the battery, start the tractor, and enter the H-Menu (H1). Run the EHR calibration procedure so the central controller can learn the travel limits of the new transducer and spool. Clear the stored R44 fault code.
