R45

Case IH R45 – EHR (Electronic Hydraulic Remote) Control Unit / Central Controller (XCM): Valve 4 Spool Travel Short Or Spool Travel Excessive Or Open Centre Not Reached

Issue description

The internal spool of the #4 Electro-Hydraulic Remote (EHR) valve is not moving to its commanded positions correctly. The system detects that the spool's travel is physically restricted (short), moving too far (excessive), or failing to return to its neutral/open-centre position. This is typically a mechanical fault within the valve, most commonly caused by a stuck spool due to hydraulic fluid contamination or an internal valve failure.

Applies to these machines

  • MXM
  • MXM 120
  • MXM 130
  • MXM 140
  • MXM 155
  • MXM 175
  • MXM 190

Check the cause

  1. Check for any other active EHR error codes. Make a note of them, clear the codes, and test the system for normal operation to see if R45 returns.

  2. Inspect the hydraulic system oil for contamination. Debris in the hydraulic fluid is a primary cause of a stuck EHR valve spool.

  3. Inspect the CAN BUS wiring harnesses and connectors between the remote valves and the central controller for shorts, opens, or corrosion.

  4. Reload the software into the central controller to rule out a software corruption issue if the wiring is intact but the valve is inoperative.

Repair steps

  1. Depressurize the System

Ensure the tractor is turned off, parked safely, and all hydraulic pressure is relieved from the remote circuits before disconnecting any lines.

  2. Address Contamination

If hydraulic contamination was found during diagnostics, flush the hydraulic system and replace the hydraulic filters to prevent damaging the new valve.

  3. Replace the Valve

Disconnect the electrical harness and hydraulic lines from EHR Valve 4. Remove the faulty valve assembly and install the replacement EHR valve. Replace any external or internal O-rings between the valve slices during reassembly.

  4. Perform EHR Valve Renumbering/Configuration

After replacing an EHR valve, you must configure the control module so the tractor recognizes the new valve sequence.

  5. Calibration Steps

Connect the diagnostic test switch (Tool No. 380000488) to the harness. Turn the Key Start switch ON and access the H-Menu, selecting Mode HL (EHR Valve Number configuration). Operate the EHR valve timer switches in quick succession as outlined in the service manual to activate the renumbering procedure and assign the correct sequence to the remotes.

  6. Final Verification

If the fault persists after valve replacement, wiring checks, and software reloads, the central processor itself may be faulty and require replacement.
