Case IH R53 – Central Controller (XCM) or EHR Control Unit: CAN Messages Received By The EHR Valve 5 Are Corrupted Or Missing.

The tractor's central computer is either receiving garbled data or has completely lost CAN bus communication with the number 5 Electro-Hydraulic Remote (EHR) valve.

   Check for related codes (such as R54, R55, or R57) to isolate if the issue is a power supply failure versus a pure communication failure.

   Inspect the CAN bus wiring harness connecting the central controller (XCM) to EHR Valve 5 for chafing, pinched wires, or corrosion at the connectors.

   Test specific CAN lines routing to the valve (CAN AUTO B+, CAN AUTO HI, CAN AUTO LOW, CAN AUTO GND) for open or short circuits.

   Verify EHR Valve 5 is receiving proper operating voltage and has a clean ground connection.

   Access the Valve Stack

   Locate the rear remote valve stack and identify EHR Valve 5.

   Clean and Inspect Connectors

   Disconnect the electrical harness from Valve 5. Clean the pins with contact cleaner and inspect for pushed-out pins or moisture intrusion. Reconnect and test to see if the code clears.

   Repair Wiring

   If continuity tests reveal a break or short in the CAN HI or CAN LOW lines between the XCM and the valve, repair or replace the affected section of the wiring harness.

   Replace the EHR Valve

   If the wiring harness is intact, power and ground are verified, and the CAN lines are healthy, the internal module/output stage of EHR Valve 5 has failed. The valve section must be removed and replaced.

   Calibrate the System

   After replacing an EHR valve or repairing the CAN bus, clear the fault codes. A transmission/EDC calibration or EHR valve configuration via the tractor's H-Menu or Electronic Service Tool may be required to introduce the new valve to the central controller.
