R55

Case IH R55 – EHR Central Controller (XCM): Valve 5 Spool Travel Short Or Spool Travel Excessive Or Open Centre Not Reached

Issue description

The internal spool of the Electronic Hydraulic Remote (EHR) Valve #5 is not moving to the position commanded by the operator. The spool is either stopping short of its target, traveling past its limit, or failing to return to the neutral (open center) position.

Applies to these machines

  • MXM
  • MXM Series (MXM 120, 130, 140, 155, 175, 190)
  • Magnum Series
  • Steiger Series
  • Puma Series

Check the cause

  1. Check the armrest lever potentiometer output signal on the tractor's diagnostic display to ensure it reads neutral correctly (diagnoses failing potentiometer).

  2. Swap the electrical connector from Valve 5 to an adjacent working valve (e.g., Valve 4) to isolate if the fault is in the wiring/lever or internal to Valve 5.

  3. Inspect the rear remote valve block for mechanical binding of the Valve 5 spool due to dirt, debris, or internal wear.

  4. Check the wiring harness between the XCM and EHR Valve 5 for shorts to ground, shorts to voltage, or broken pins.

Repair steps

  1. Attempt System Calibration

Before replacing parts, attempt to recalibrate the EHR system. For MXM models: Install diagnostic test switch (tool No. 380000488), enter the H-menu (Mode HL), and operate the EHR valve switch 3 times quickly. For Magnum/Steiger models: Access the calibration menu via the A-post display, move the levers fully back, fully forward, and then to neutral. Some models may require the CAS2806 remote calibration tool.

  2. Replace the Armrest Lever

If the potentiometer is failing (lever shows active when in neutral), remove the armrest pod cover, disconnect the faulty lever switch, and install a new EHR lever.

  3. Replace the EHR Valve

If the valve spool is mechanically damaged or the internal position sensor has failed, the valve slice must be replaced. Relieve all hydraulic pressure, disconnect the hydraulic lines and electrical harness, unbolt Valve 5 from the remote stack, and install the replacement valve.

  4. Perform Final Calibration

Anytime an EHR valve, armrest potentiometer, or XCM controller is replaced, you must perform a full EHR calibration for the system to learn the new component's travel limits.
