Case IH t3B – PCU (Powertrain Control Unit): PCU Initialization, Shorted To High Source
Issue description
During the startup and initialization phase of the control unit, the system detected a voltage on the initialization circuit that is higher than the expected normal range. This is typically caused by a wire shorting directly to a power source (like battery voltage) or an internal short within the module itself.

Check the cause
Ensure the tractor's battery is fully charged and the alternator is not overcharging, which can trigger High Source voltage codes
Visually inspect the wiring harness leading to the PCU for chafed, pinched, or melted insulation that could allow the initialization wire to touch a 12V power supply wire
Disconnect the PCU harness and inspect the pins for water ingress, corrosion, or bent pins bridging a power circuit to the initialization circuit
Using a multimeter, test the initialization circuit for continuity to power (with the key on and module disconnected) to isolate if the short is in the wiring harness or internal to the PCU
Repair steps
Disconnect Power
Always disconnect the negative battery cable before servicing sensitive transmission electronics.
Isolate the Short
If your multimeter test showed voltage on the initialization line with the PCU disconnected, trace the wiring harness back toward the fuse panel/power distribution center.
Repair Wiring
Repair any damaged wires using weather-sealed heat shrink connectors. If the harness is severely melted, a replacement harness section may be required.
Clean Connections
Spray the PCU connectors with electrical contact cleaner and apply a small amount of dielectric grease to prevent moisture ingress.
Module Replacement (If Necessary)
If the wiring harness tests perfectly fine (no short to power) but the code immediately returns upon key-on, the PCU has an internal short and must be replaced.
Reassembly and Calibration
Reconnect the battery. Clear the fault codes. If the PCU was replaced, you must perform a full transmission calibration (often accessed via the tractor's H-Menu or an electronic service tool) so the new module can learn the clutch fill times and valve parameters.
