Case IH t41 – Vehicle Control Unit (PCU) / Transmission Controller or Engine Control Unit (EDC): MSG1 message, data valid but above normal range
Issue description
This is a Controller Area Network (CAN) bus communication error. It indicates that the control module is successfully receiving the MSG1 CAN message and the data packet is properly formatted (valid), but the actual sensor value or data parameter contained within that message is higher than the programmed normal operating threshold.

Check the cause
Verify the tractor's battery voltage and cab grounds. Voltage spikes or drops can cause modules to broadcast out-of-range CAN data.
With the power OFF and keyswitch OFF, disconnect the battery. Measure the resistance across the CAN High and CAN Low pins at the diagnostic port. It should read approximately 60 ohms.
Disconnect the connectors at both ends of the CAN circuit (between the EDC and the PCU). Test the wiring harness for continuity, shorts to ground, and shorts to 12V power.
Connect the CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST). Monitor the CAN bus data stream to identify exactly which parameter inside the MSG1 broadcast is reading too high.
Repair steps
Power Down
Turn off the tractor, remove the key, and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical damage during harness inspection.
Inspect Connectors
Locate the main harness connectors at the Engine Control Unit and the Transmission/Vehicle Control Unit. Disconnect them and inspect for pushed-back pins, corrosion, or moisture ingress (a common cause of corrupted CAN data).
Clean and Re-seat
Clean the pins with electronic contact cleaner, apply dielectric grease, and firmly re-seat the connectors.
Repair Wiring
If the continuity tests in the diagnostic phase revealed high resistance or a short to ground/power, locate the chafe point in the harness (commonly near cab pivot points or engine vibration points) and splice in a repair wire.
Clear Codes and Calibrate
Reconnect the battery. Use the CNH EST or the tractor's H-Menu (if equipped) to clear the inactive t41 fault code.
Test Operation
Start the engine and run it through its RPM range. If the code immediately returns without a wiring fault, the module or sensor generating the MSG1 data is internally failing and will require replacement.
