Case IH t46 – Digital Instrument Cluster (DIC) / Electronic Instrument Cluster (EIC): CAN CCVSS message, data incorrect

Issue description

Data communication error on the tractor's Controller Area Network (CAN) bus. Specifically, the system is receiving an invalid, corrupted, or incorrect data message regarding the CCVSS (Cruise Control Vehicle Speed Sensor / System).

Applies to these machines

  • MXM
  • MXM 120
  • MXM 130
  • MXM 140
  • MXM 155
  • MXM 175
  • MXM 190
  • Puma
  • Magnum

Check the cause

  1. Power Down: Turn the keyswitch to the OFF position. Disconnect the battery or pull the relevant fuse to prevent false multimeter readings.

  2. Isolate the Circuit: Disconnect the connectors at each end of the affected CAN circuit to isolate the wiring.

  3. Visual Inspection: Inspect the harness outer covering and connectors for physical damage, corrosion, or pushed-back pins.

  4. Multimeter Testing: Use a high-quality multimeter (capable of measuring at least 20,000 ohms) to check circuit resistance. Check for high resistance, open circuits, or shorts to ground/power.

  5. Check for Interference: Verify that there is no external electrical interference disrupting the CAN BUS network.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect connectors

Disconnect the affected connectors on the CAN bus line.

  2. Strip harness

Strip back the harness outer covering to expose the damaged wiring.

  3. Extract damaged pins

If a connector pin is corroded or damaged, use the specific pin removal tool from an OEM harness repair kit to extract the pin. Ensure correct pin removal to avoid damaging the plastic connector housing.

  4. Splice new wire

If the wire itself is damaged, cut out the affected section. Splice in a new wire of the exact length required, following the original harness routing.

  5. Crimp and seat pins

Crimp on new connector pins if necessary, and firmly seat them back into the connector block.

  6. Verify repair

Reconnect the harness, restore power, and turn the keyswitch ON to verify that the t46 code has cleared from the EIC display.
