Case IH t4E – Electronic Engine Controller (ECU): Coolant Temperature Sensor (PHY), Data Valid But Above Normal Range

Issue description

The sensor's electrical circuit is intact and sending a valid, readable signal to the controller, but the temperature value being reported has exceeded the maximum normal operating threshold. This indicates either a genuine engine overheating condition or a sensor whose internal resistance has drifted out of calibration, causing it to read artificially high.

Check the cause

  1. Verify actual engine temperature to rule out a genuine overheating condition (check for blocked radiator fins, a failing water pump, or a broken fan belt)

  2. Check coolant levels to ensure the reservoir is full, as low coolant can cause localized boiling and temperature spikes

  3. Perform a rationality check by comparing the coolant temperature reading against the transmission oil temperature or intake manifold temperature when the tractor is cold (if the coolant sensor reads significantly hotter, it has drifted and is faulty)

  4. Test the harness and connectors by turning the keyswitch OFF, disconnecting the battery, disconnecting the harness at the sensor and the ECU, and checking the wiring for high resistance, corrosion at the pins, or a short to ground (avoid touching the metal case of the connectors with the test leads to prevent false readings)

Repair steps

  1. Prep the Machine

    Park the tractor on a level surface, turn off the engine, and allow the cooling system to depressurize and cool down completely.

  2. Drain Coolant

    Drain a small amount of coolant from the radiator petcock to bring the fluid level below the sensor port. This prevents excessive spillage.

  3. Remove the Sensor

    Locate the coolant temperature sensor on the engine block/thermostat housing. Depress the locking tab on the 2-terminal electrical connector and pull it off. Use a wrench to unthread the old sensor.

  4. Install the New Sensor

    Thread the new sensor into the port (standard thread sizes for these engines are typically M14 x 1.5 or M17 x 1.50). Tighten to OEM specifications.

  5. Reconnect and Refill

    Plug the electrical connector back in until it clicks. Refill the engine coolant to the appropriate level.

  6. Test

    Turn the key ON to verify the fault code has cleared. Start the engine, let it reach operating temperature, and check for leaks around the new sensor threads.
