Case IH t5 – Electronic Engine Control Unit (ECU) or Hand Throttle/PTO Control Module (XCM): CAN AE Message (Torque Set point), Data Valid But Below Normal Range
Issue description
The control module is receiving a Controller Area Network (CAN) bus message for the Torque Setpoint (AE message) that is formatted correctly (the data is valid), but the value falls below the expected normal operating parameters. This typically points to a communication timing issue on the CAN bus, a wiring fault, or a sensor issue related to torque demand (such as a throttle position sensor) sending an abnormally low value.

Check the cause
Verify battery health and voltage drop during cranking (should not drop below 9-10 volts to prevent ECU low-voltage/CAN faults)
Test CAN bus voltage using a multimeter on the Yellow and Green wires against ground (combined voltage should be approximately 5 volts)
Inspect CAN bus active terminating resistors for broken solder joints, especially on older models
Check for associated CAN timeout codes such as 3100 or 3101 (Timeout of CAN Message TSC1-AE)
Use the Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to check if TECU/ECU controllers have the most current software version
Repair steps
Resolve Voltage Issues
If battery voltage drops excessively during cranking, replace the battery or repair the starter motor/alternator circuit to ensure stable voltage to the ECU.
Repair Wiring/Connectors
Inspect the CAN bus wiring harness for chafing, corrosion, or loose connections. Repair any damaged sections using proper CAN bus wiring repair connectors (e.g., Deutsch connectors).
Replace Terminating Resistors
If the older active terminators are found to have broken solder joints, replace them. They have generally been superseded by an updated, smaller plug style that contains 2 standard resistors to properly terminate the CAN bus.
Update Software
Connect the Case IH EST and flash the ECU/XCM with the latest software to resolve any communication timing glitches.
Replace Control Module
If wiring, terminators, and software are all verified good, but the code persists and the module fails to communicate properly, replace the Engine Control Unit (ECU). After replacement, you must perform the necessary transmission/EDC calibration setup procedures.
