Case IH t66 – Engine Control Unit (ECU): IAT System, Data Valid But Below Normal Range

Issue description

The Intake Air Temperature (IAT) sensor is sending a signal to the control module that is electrically valid (meaning there is no direct short or open circuit), but the temperature reading is abnormally low compared to what the engine expects under the current operating conditions. This is typically caused by a failing sensor element, high resistance in the wiring harness, or severe intake restriction.

Check the cause

  1. Connect the CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST) or a compatible scanner to read live Intake Air Temperature data with a cold engine; verify if it closely matches ambient outside temperature.

  2. Inspect the IAT sensor electrical connector for dirt, moisture, or corroded pins that can cause high resistance.

  3. Inspect the wiring harness between the IAT sensor and the ECU for chafing or damage.

  4. Disconnect the sensor and use a multimeter to measure the resistance across the sensor pins, comparing the reading to the OEM temperature-to-resistance chart.

Repair steps

  1. Turn off the tractor, remove the key, and allow the engine to cool completely.

    Ensure the engine is completely cool before beginning work.

  2. Locate the IAT sensor.

    On modern Case IH FPT engines, this is usually a dual-function T-MAP (Temperature and Manifold Absolute Pressure) sensor located directly on the intake manifold or the boost piping after the charge air cooler.

  3. Depress the locking tab and disconnect the electrical wiring harness from the sensor.

    Carefully remove the connector without damaging the locking tab.

  4. Remove the retaining bolt(s) securing the sensor to the manifold, or unthread it if it is a screw-in type.

    Use the appropriate tools to remove the mounting hardware.

  5. Carefully pull the old sensor out of the intake tract.

    Remove the sensor from its mounting location.

  6. Clean the mounting port on the manifold to ensure a good seal.

    Remove any debris or old sealing material from the port.

  7. Insert the new sensor and tighten the mounting hardware to OEM torque specifications.

    Ensure the O-ring is lightly lubricated if applicable before insertion.

  8. Reconnect the electrical harness until it clicks into place.

    Ensure a secure electrical connection.

  9. Turn the ignition to the ON position and use your diagnostic tool to clear the t66 fault code.

    Start the engine and verify that the code does not return.
