Case IH t7 – Electronic Engine Controller (ECU) or PTO/Hand Throttle Controller (XCM): CAN AE Message (Torque Set point), Data Valid But Above Normal Range

Issue description

The engine control module is receiving a torque setpoint command over the CAN bus (likely from the transmission or PTO controller) that is properly formatted (valid data) but requests a torque value that exceeds the engine's allowable or normal operating limits.

Check the cause

  1. Check for accompanying codes on the display panel, particularly throttle position sensor codes (t1, t2, t3, t4) or transmission/PTO codes, as a faulty input sensor can cause abnormal torque requests

  2. Inspect the CAN bus wiring harness between the Engine ECU, Transmission Controller, and PTO controller for chafing, rodent damage, or pinched wires

  3. Check the multi-pin connectors at the Engine ECU and Transmission Controller for moisture, corrosion, or backed-out pins

  4. Disconnect the tractor's battery for a few minutes to perform a hard reset of the modules, which can clear temporary communication glitches

Repair steps

  1. Connect Diagnostic Tool

    Hook up the CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST) laptop to the tractor's diagnostic port to read all active and stored fault codes.

  2. Clear and Retest

    Erase the stored codes, cycle the ignition, and operate the tractor to see if the t7 code returns.

  3. Perform Calibrations

    If the code returns, enter the tractor's "H-Menu" (Calibration/Configuration menu) and perform a full transmission and clutch calibration. Torque mismatch codes are often resolved by recalibrating the transmission controller's engagement parameters.

  4. Repair Wiring

    If calibration fails or communication drops, repair or replace any damaged sections of the CAN bus wiring harness. Clean the ECU connector pins with contact cleaner and apply dielectric grease.

  5. Software Update / Module Replacement

    If the wiring is perfectly intact and the sensors are reading correctly, the Engine ECU or Transmission Controller may have corrupted software. A dealer will need to re-flash the firmware (e.g., Bosch EDC MS6.4 update) or replace the faulty module.
