Case IH t7E – PCU: Crankshaft Signal In PCU, Data Valid But Below Normal Range

Issue description

This code indicates that the control unit is receiving a signal from the crankshaft position/speed sensor that is recognized as a valid format, but the reading (likely the frequency or RPM value) is falling below the expected normal operating threshold. This can cause starting issues, poor engine performance, or stalling.

Applies to these machines

  • MXM
  • MXM 120
  • MXM 130
  • MXM 140
  • MXM 155
  • MXM 175
  • MXM 190

Check the cause

  1. Turn the keyswitch OFF and disconnect the battery to prevent false readings or module damage

  2. Visually inspect the crankshaft speed sensor tip for metallic debris or physical damage

  3. Disconnect the sensor harness and check the connector pins for corrosion, pushed-back pins, or moisture

  4. Test the sensor wiring harness for continuity from the sensor connector back to the PCU

  5. Check the sensor wiring for a short to ground or a short to 12V power

  6. Measure the resistance across the pins of the crankshaft sensor itself to ensure it is not open (infinite resistance) or shorted internally

Repair steps

  1. Ensure the tractor is turned off and the battery is disconnected.

  2. Disconnect the electrical connector from the crankshaft speed sensor.

  3. Remove the retaining fastener holding the sensor in place.

Typically an M6 hex socket head screw.

  4. Carefully pull the old sensor out of the housing.

If it is stuck, twist it gently—do not pry aggressively, as breaking the tip off inside the housing will require extensive disassembly.

  5. Clean the mounting surface and the bore.

Ensure the new sensor seats perfectly flat (an improper seating depth will cause a weak signal).

  6. Install the new crankshaft sensor and tighten the retaining screw.

  7. Reconnect the electrical harness.

Ensure the locking tab clicks into place.

  8. Reconnect the battery, start the tractor, and verify the repair.

Verify that the engine speed registers correctly and the t7E code is cleared.
