Case IH t81 – PCU (Power Control Unit): Pump Map, Data Valid But Above Normal Range

Issue description

The control module is receiving a valid data signal from the transmission/hydraulic pump mapping sensor, but the reading is exceeding the maximum threshold for normal operation. This typically points to a calibration drift, a sensor reading error, or an internal mechanical pressure issue within the pump.

Applies to these machines

  • MXM
  • MXM 120
  • MXM 130
  • MXM 140
  • MXM 155
  • MXM 175
  • MXM 190

Check the cause

  1. Verify the transmission/hydraulic fluid is at the correct level and free of debris or burnt odors.

  2. Ensure the transmission fluid is at normal operating temperature (between 20°C and 50°C) before attempting any diagnostic calibrations.

  3. Inspect the wiring harness connecting the transmission pump sensors to the PCU for chafing, corrosion, or loose pins.

  4. Review recent repairs to see if the non-volatile memory has been reset, a microprocessor was replaced, a PWM solenoid valve was replaced, or a potentiometer was disconnected while the key was 'ON'.

Repair steps

  1. Prepare the Tractor for Calibration

Park the tractor on a level surface, apply the parking brake, turn off the air conditioning, and deselect all electrical and hydraulic services.

  2. Enter Calibration Mode

Access the 'H' menu (H1 Clutch and Synchroniser Calibration) via the digital instrument cluster.

  3. Run the H1 Calibration

Hold the High and Low range buttons and start the engine. 'CAL' will appear on the transmission display. Release the buttons and set the engine speed to 1200 RPM (±100).

  4. Complete the Sequence

Follow the on-screen prompts to calibrate the clutches. The display will show numbers increasing, followed by 'SOC' and finally 'END' to signify completion.

  5. Test and Verify

Restart the tractor and test the transmission. If the t81 code returns, the issue is mechanical.

  6. Mechanical Repair

If calibration fails, replace the transmission charge/oil pump or the associated pressure sensor/potentiometer.

  7. Final Calibration

After replacing any transmission components, you must repeat the H1 calibration procedure to map the new pump data to the PCU.
