t8C

Case IH t8C – Engine Control Unit (ECU): Pump Timing Device, Data Valid But Below Normal Range

Issue description

A plausibility error between the primary and secondary engine speed sensors prevents the system from accurately verifying the fuel injection pump timing, triggering a protective derate that restricts the maximum engine speed to 1760 RPM.

Applies to these machines

  • MXM
  • MXM 120
  • MXM 130
  • MXM 140
  • MXM 155
  • MXM 175
  • MXM 190

Check the cause

  1. Verify if the primary crankshaft speed sensor is failing or providing erratic readings compared to the secondary sensor

  2. Inspect the wiring harness and connectors at the speed sensors and injection pump for corrosion, backed-out pins, or moisture

  3. If sensors and wiring are intact, check the fuel injection pump for an internal timing device failure

Repair steps

  1. Power Down and Isolate

Turn the keyswitch OFF and disconnect the battery (or pull the specified fuse) to prevent false electrical readings.

  2. Inspect Wiring and Connectors

Disconnect the connectors at the crankshaft speed sensor and the fuel injection pump. Visually inspect the pins for damage.

  3. Test Circuit Resistance

Set a multimeter to measure resistance (ohms). Connect the black lead to a clean, unpainted chassis ground and use the red lead to probe the connector pins one at a time. Ensure the measured resistance falls within the normal range and that there are no shorts to ground.

  4. Test/Replace the Crankshaft Speed Sensor

If the wiring is good, test the crankshaft speed sensor. Because the t8C code is caused by a plausibility error between the primary and secondary speed sensors, a failing crankshaft sensor is a common culprit. Replace it if it fails testing.

  5. Address the Fuel Injection Pump

If the speed sensors and wiring harness are fully functional, the fault lies within the fuel injection pump's internal timing device. The pump will need to be removed and either sent to a diesel specialist for rebuilding or replaced entirely.

  6. Recalibrate and Test

After replacing the faulty component, clear the fault codes, start the engine, and verify that the tractor can exceed the 1760 RPM restriction without the t8C code returning.
