Case IH t8D – EMU / EDC: Pump Timing Device, Data Valid But Above Normal Range
Issue description
The engine controller detects that the fuel injection pump's timing device piston is operating outside of its normal expected parameters (data valid but value too high). This is most commonly caused by air in the fuel system, which causes continuous oscillation of the injection pump timing device piston. It can also be caused by wiring issues or a mechanical failure of the timing piston itself. The controller will activate a fault mode, limiting engine speed to around 1500 RPM and reducing power to avoid internal damage.

Check the cause
Check for air in the fuel system by inspecting all fuel lines, fittings, and the water separator/filter housings for suction leaks
Bleed the fuel system completely to ensure no trapped air is reaching the injection pump
Check fuel filters to ensure they are not restricted, which can cause a vacuum on the supply side and introduce air or low fuel pressure
Perform wiring and harness checks: Turn keyswitch OFF, disconnect harness at injection pump and EMU/EDC, check continuity (3-4 ohms max), and check for shorts or high resistance (over 100K ohms indicates open circuit or corrosion)
Repair steps
Remove the Injection Pump
Disconnect all fuel lines, electrical connectors, and linkage. Remove the injection pump from the engine block following the service manual procedure (requires locking the engine at top dead center and using an extractor for the injection pump drive gear).
Mount the Pump
Secure the injection pump in a soft-jawed vice. Ensure the pump is in the unlocked condition.
Replace the Timing Device Piston
Access the timing device cover on the lower section of the Bosch VE/VP injection pump. Remove the cover, extract the old timing device piston and springs, and install the new piston from the repair kit.
Reinstall and Time the Pump
Reinstall the injection pump to the engine. The pump timing must be strictly checked and set prior to final installation (aligning the shaft keyway groove with the injector outlet).
Bleed and Clear Codes
Reconnect all lines, bleed the fuel system thoroughly, and use the tractor's H-Menu or an electronic service tool to clear the stored t8D / 3633-0 fault code.
