Case IH t97 – Engine Control Unit (ECU) / Pump Control Unit (PCU): Monitoring Module, Data Valid But Above Normal Range

Issue description

Internal communication or watchdog error. The monitoring module has received a valid data signal, but the value falls outside the acceptable normal operating threshold, indicating a synchronization or internal processing fault.

Applies to these machines

  • MXM
  • MXM 120
  • MXM 130
  • MXM 140
  • MXM 155
  • MXM 175
  • MXM 190
  • TM1500

Check the cause

  1. Check for limp mode conditions (e.g., engine speed restricted to 1300 rpm and reduced fuel quantity) and look for associated CAN bus or PCU codes such as tAA, tAB, or tAC.

  2. Perform a voltage drop test on the power and ground circuits feeding the ECU and PCU to ensure system voltage is not spiking or dropping.

  3. Turn the keyswitch OFF, disconnect the connectors at the ECU/PCU, and inspect for corroded pins, moisture intrusion, or loose terminals.

  4. Measure circuit resistance using a multimeter (avoiding contact with the metal case of the connectors) to ensure the wiring harness between the modules is intact.

Repair steps

  1. Power Down

Turn the keyswitch to the OFF position and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical spikes.

  2. Clean and Re-seat Connectors

If any corrosion or loose pins were found during the diagnostic checks on the ECU or PCU harnesses, clean the contacts with electronic cleaner, repair any damaged pins, and firmly re-seat the connectors.

  3. Clear and Retest

Reconnect the battery, turn the key switch ON, and use the electronic service tool or the tractor's H-Menu (diagnostic menu) to clear the fault codes. Start the engine and operate the tractor to see if code t97 returns.

  4. Module Replacement

If the wiring and power supplies are perfectly intact and the code immediately returns, the internal hardware of the control unit has failed. Replace the Engine Control Unit (ECU) or Pump Control Unit (PCU) and perform the required transmission/EDC calibrations and non-volatile memory resets using the service tool.

Parts you might need

(1)
  • Engine Control Unit (ECU) / Pump Control Unit (PCU)

Specific part numbers depend heavily on the exact MXM model and engine serial number. If replaced, the new microprocessor/controller will require a complete non-volatile memory reset and system calibration (including transmission and clutch calibrations) before the tractor can be operated.
