Case IH TBA – Engine Control Unit (ECU): Crankshaft Speed Sensor - No Signal

Issue description

The Engine Control Unit (ECU) is not receiving a pulse signal from the crankshaft speed sensor, preventing the ECU from determining proper fuel injection timing. This may result in the system entering a backup mode, a crank-no-start condition, rough running, or poor fuel economy.

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the wiring harness leading to the sensor for breaks, chafing, or short circuits (short to ground or short to battery).

  2. Check the sensor connector for corrosion or reverse polarity.

  3. Ensure the sensor is properly seated and check the gap between the sensor tip and the flywheel teeth (typically 0.5mm to 2.0mm).

  4. Inspect the magnetic pickup for debris buildup that could block the signal.

  5. Use a diagnostic scan tool to monitor live data; crank the engine and check if the ECU registers any RPM.

  6. Perform a synchronization check by comparing the crankshaft signal with the camshaft signal on the diagnostic tool to rule out mechanical timing issues.

Repair steps

  1. Preparation

    Disconnect the machine's battery to prevent electrical shorts and ensure the engine is cool.

  2. Locate the Sensor

    Find the crankshaft speed sensor, which is typically mounted on the side of the engine block near the flywheel housing.

  3. Removal

    Disconnect the electrical connector from the sensor. Remove the retaining bolt and carefully pull the sensor out of the engine block.

  4. Cleaning

    Thoroughly clean the mounting surface and the port to ensure no dirt or debris falls into the flywheel housing, which could affect the new sensor's seating.

  5. Installation

    Insert the new sensor. If your specific engine requires manual gap adjustment, use a feeler gauge to set the gap between the sensor tip and the flywheel teeth to the OEM specification. Tighten the retaining bolt.

  6. Reconnection

    Reconnect the electrical harness, ensuring the weather seal is intact and the connector clicks into place.

  7. Calibration/Relearn

    Reconnect the battery. Connect your diagnostic scan tool, clear the stored 3088 fault code, and initiate a 'Cam-Crank Relearn' or synchronization procedure if required by your specific engine's ECM.
