Case IH TBA – Engine Controller (EDC / ECU): Engine overspeed Error - Crank Speed Sensor or Camshaft Speed Sensor Failure
Issue description
This fault code indicates an Engine Overspeed Error directly resulting from a failure or loss of synchronization between the Crankshaft Speed Sensor and the Camshaft Speed Sensor. The engine controller relies on these inductive sensors to read the trigger wheels and determine engine position and RPM. If the controller receives an invalid signal, no signal, or a signal indicating the RPM has exceeded the maximum safe threshold, it triggers this critical error to protect the engine.

Check the cause
Verify whether an actual mechanical overspeed event occurred (e.g., equipment pushed down a steep grade) or if it is strictly a sensor failure.
Check the wiring harnesses for both the crank and cam speed sensors for open circuits, shorts to ground, or shorts to the battery. Ensure the multiplug connectors are tight and free of corrosion.
Use a diagnostic service tool to monitor the live RPM data from both the camshaft and crankshaft sensors while cranking the engine. Look for an 'Invalid Signal', 'No Signal', or a 'Reverse Connected' status.
Inspect the trigger wheels on the camshaft and crankshaft for missing teeth, damage, or debris buildup that could disrupt the magnetic pulse.
Repair steps
Disconnect Power
Disconnect the battery to prevent electrical shorts and ensure safety.
Locate the Sensors
Crankshaft Speed Sensor: Typically located on the lower engine block near the flywheel/bell housing. You may need to remove the air box assembly or battery tray for access depending on the machine frame. Camshaft Speed Sensor: Located near the cylinder head or timing gear cover.
Remove the Faulty Sensor
Disconnect the electrical multiplug from the sensor. Remove the retaining bolt and carefully pull the sensor out of its bore.
Clean and Install
Wipe the sensor bore clean of any oil or debris. Insert the new sensor, ensuring it seats completely flush. Install and tighten the retaining bolt.
Reconnect
Plug the electrical connector back in and reconnect the battery.
Clear Codes & Reprogram (If Necessary)
Clear the fault codes using a diagnostic tool. If the fault persists after replacing the sensors and verifying the wiring, reload Engine Dataset Or Replace Engine Controller. If the EDC is replaced, follow the appropriate service tool procedure to restore self-learning parameters.
