tC8

Case IH tC8 – PCU (Powertrain Control Unit) / Transmission Controller: No Signal From The Engine Torque/RPM Sensor

Issue description

The control unit is failing to receive the inductive square-wave frequency data that monitors the rotational movement of the engine's crankshaft/flywheel. This signal is critical for adjusting fuel injection, automated power-shift transmission modulation, electro-hydraulic PTO operation, and clutch calibration.

Applies to these machines

  • MXM
  • MXM 120
  • MXM 130
  • MXM 140
  • MXM 155
  • MXM 175
  • MXM 190

Check the cause

  1. Check for associated codes U56 (Engine torque/RPM sensor open circuit) or U57 (Engine torque/RPM sensor short to ground) to narrow down the electrical fault

  2. Inspect the 2-pin male plug-and-play socket and the wiring harness routing to the PCU for shorts, breaks, or corrosion

Repair steps

  1. Locate sensor

Locate the Engine Torque/RPM sensor on the flywheel bell housing or transmission housing cover.

  2. Disconnect connector

    Disconnect the 2-pin electrical connector.

  3. Remove sensor

Unthread/remove the faulty sensor from the housing.

  4. Install sensor

    Install the new sensor.

  5. Reconnect connector

    Reconnect the 2-pin electrical connector.

  6. Perform calibration

Mandatory Calibration: Because a sensor/potentiometer was replaced, you must perform the H1 Clutch and Synchroniser Calibration (Transmission/EDC Calibration).

  7. Prepare for calibration

To calibrate: Place all shift levers in neutral, block the wheels, apply the handbrake, and lower all equipment to the ground.

  8. Initiate calibration

Hold the High and Low range buttons and start the engine. Release the buttons when 'CAL' appears on the transmission display.

  9. Set engine speed

Set the engine speed to exactly 1200 ERPM (± 100).

  10. Complete calibration

Follow the on-screen prompts to cycle through the clutch packs until 'END' displays, signifying completion.
