Case IH tCC – PCU: PCU Initialization, Data Valid But Below Normal Range
Issue description
This fault code indicates that during the startup and initialization sequence, the Powertrain Control Unit (PCU) received data that was technically valid (recognized by the system) but fell below the normal expected operating range. This is typically a communication, sensor baseline, or voltage-related issue occurring on the CAN bus network during boot-up.
Applies to these machines
8 machines- MXM
- MXM Series
- MXM 120
- MXM 130
- MXM 140
- MXM 155
- MXM 175
- MXM 190
Check the cause
Check for accompanying PCU or CAN bus codes (such as TD0, TCD, TCE, or TCF) that might pinpoint the issue
Test the battery load and alternator output, as a weak battery causing a voltage drop during cranking is a primary suspect
Inspect the main power supply relays and fuses feeding the PCU, and ensure the ground strap to the chassis/cab is clean and tight
Inspect the CAN bus wiring harness connecting to the PCU for chafing, moisture ingress, or corroded connector pins
Repair steps
Resolve Voltage Drops
If the battery fails a load test or drops below 9.5V during cranking, replace the battery. Clean all battery terminals and chassis ground connections with a wire brush.
Clean PCU Connectors
Disconnect the negative battery terminal. Locate the PCU, unplug the main harness connectors, and spray them with a high-quality electrical contact cleaner. Check for pushed-back pins and reconnect securely.
Clear Codes and Retest
Reconnect the battery, turn the key to the ON position, and allow the system to initialize. Clear the fault codes using the tractor's electronic service tool or the H-Menu calibration sequence.
Recalibrate / Flash
If the code returns immediately upon initialization and the wiring/voltage checks out, the PCU may have corrupted software. A dealer will need to re-flash or recalibrate the PCU using the CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST).
Replace the PCU
If the module will not accept a calibration or continues to log internal initialization failures, the PCU itself has suffered an internal hardware failure and must be replaced.
Parts you might need

2854971Exact part numbers vary heavily by the specific tractor serial number and cab configuration. Always verify with a CNH dealer using your PIN/Serial. Modules usually require dealer programming/flashing with the CNH EST tool after installation to match the tractor's specific transmission and hydraulic configuration.
