Case IH tD – Engine Control Unit (ECU) or Power Control Unit (PCU) / Transmission Controller: Ambient Pressure Sensor (PHY), Data Incorrect

The control module is receiving an erratic, intermittent, or implausible signal from the ambient (atmospheric/barometric) pressure sensor. The sensor data does not align with the expected operating parameters, which can cause the engine to default to a derated state (typically a torque reduction of about 15%) to protect the system.

   Determine if your specific engine utilizes an external ambient pressure sensor or an internal sensor integrated directly into the ECU circuit board

   For external sensors: Inspect the sensor wiring harness for chafing, open circuits, or shorts to ground/high voltage

   For external sensors: Check the connector pins for corrosion or moisture intrusion

   For external sensors: Verify that the sensor is receiving the correct 5V reference voltage from the ECU

   For internal sensors: Test the ECU operation by swapping it with a known-good EEM3 controller to see if the fault clears

   Power Down

   Turn off the machine, remove the key, and disconnect the battery ground cable to prevent electrical spikes.

   Locate the Sensor

   Consult your specific engine service manual to locate the ambient pressure sensor.

   External Sensor Replacement

   If the sensor is external and wiring tests passed, disconnect the sensor harness. Unbolt/unscrew the faulty ambient pressure sensor from its mounting location. Install the new sensor, torque to OEM spec, and reconnect the harness.

   Internal Sensor / ECU Replacement

   If the sensor is internal to the ECU, it cannot be serviced separately. Disconnect the main wiring harnesses from the ECU, remove the ECU from its mounting bracket, and install the replacement ECU. Note: A new ECU will require dealer-level software (e.g., Case IH EST) to flash the correct firmware and calibrate the module to the tractor.

   Clear and Test

   Reconnect the battery, clear the inactive fault codes via the H-Menu or diagnostic tool, and run the engine to verify the tD code does not return.
