Case IH tD5 – PCU (Powertrain Control Unit): Hand Throttle Position Sensor Difference Error
Issue description
Modern electronic hand throttles use a dual-potentiometer setup (Potentiometer 1 and Potentiometer 2) for safety and redundancy. The control module constantly monitors the voltage signals from both potentiometers. If the two signals do not agree or fall out of sync with each other, the system logs the tD5 difference error.

Check the cause
Inspect the wiring harness and the connector at the hand throttle position sensor for loose contacts, corrosion, or physical damage.
Verify that the sensor is receiving the correct reference voltage (typically a 5Vdc supply) from the control unit.
Test the output voltages of Potentiometer 1 and Potentiometer 2 while sweeping the hand throttle. Look for dead spots, erratic voltage drops, or a short circuit to ground/battery voltage.
Repair steps
Power Down
Turn off the key switch and disconnect battery power to prevent electrical spikes.
Access the Sensor
Locate the hand throttle control assembly, typically housed in the right-hand armrest or side console. Remove the necessary trim panels to access the underside of the throttle lever.
Disconnect
Firmly grip the electrical connector and unplug it from the hand throttle potentiometer. Do not pull on the wires.
Remove and Replace
Unbolt the faulty potentiometer from the throttle handle assembly and install the replacement sensor.
Reassemble
Reconnect the electrical harness and reinstall the console trim.
System Calibration
According to the Transmission/EDC Calibration Set Up Procedures, a calibration is strictly required whenever a potentiometer has been replaced. You must enter the tractor's H-Menu (diagnostic/calibration mode) and run the specific calibration routine for the hand throttle so the PCU can learn the new sensor's minimum and maximum voltage values.
