Case IH tD6 – PCU: Hand Throttle Idle Switch Open Circuit
Issue description
The control module is not receiving the expected electrical signal from the idle validation switch located on the hand throttle assembly. An "open circuit" means the electrical path is physically broken—this is typically caused by a disconnected plug, a severed wire in the harness, or an internal failure of the switch/potentiometer itself.
Applies to these machines

- MXM 120

- MXM 175
- MXM 190
Check the cause
Visually inspect the hand throttle assembly on the right-hand cab console, checking the wiring harness and electrical connector for loose, backed-out, or corroded pins.
Disconnect the hand throttle switch connector and use a digital multimeter to test the switch for continuity when the hand throttle lever is placed in the idle position (no continuity indicates internal failure).
Test the wiring harness between the hand throttle connector and the PCU for an open circuit or a short to ground.
Verify that the potentiometer/switch is receiving the correct reference voltage from the PCU when the key is in the 'ON' position.
Repair steps
Safety First
Turn off the tractor, engage the parking brake, and disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical shorts.
Access the Component
Remove the necessary trim panels on the right-hand cab console to expose the hand throttle mechanism and its wiring.
Removal
Disconnect the 3-terminal electrical connector from the hand throttle potentiometer/switch. Remove the mounting bolts or retaining clips holding the sensor or the entire throttle assembly in place.
Installation
Install the new potentiometer or hand throttle assembly. Secure the mounting hardware and reconnect the electrical plug, ensuring it clicks firmly into place.
Reassembly
Reinstall the right-hand console trim panels and reconnect the battery.
Calibration
Turn the key switch to the "ON" position. Clear the fault codes and perform a Transmission/EDC calibration using the tractor's H-Menu calibration mode (Mode HA) so the PCU can learn the new minimum and maximum throttle voltages.
