tE5

Case IH tE5 – PCU (Powertrain Control Unit): Last element (unknown input)

Issue description

The control module has received an input signal (such as a rogue voltage on an unassigned pin or an unrecognized CAN bus message) that it does not recognize, or the diagnostic software has reached the end of its fault array without finding a defined condition.

Applies to these machines

  • MXM
  • MXM 120
  • MXM 130
  • MXM 140
  • MXM 155
  • MXM 175
  • MXM 190

Check the cause

  1. Check for companion codes (TE, TC, TD prefix) and address them first, as tE5 is frequently triggered alongside other active codes.

  2. Check the PCU software version, as an outdated version might not recognize certain inputs or contain a bug.

  3. Inspect the main wiring harness and connectors at the PCU for chafed wires, water intrusion, or a short to power/ground on an unassigned pin.

Repair steps

  1. Connect Diagnostic Tool

Connect the CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to the tractor's diagnostic port.

  2. Read and Document

Pull all active and stored fault codes. If other codes are present, diagnose and repair those circuits first.

  3. Clear Codes

Clear the PCU fault memory and operate the tractor to see if the tE5 code returns. Often, this is a phantom code caused by a momentary voltage spike.

  4. Flash/Update the PCU

If the code returns and causes operational issues, use the CNH EST to check for available software updates for the Powertrain Control Unit. Re-flash the controller to the latest software version.

  5. Pin-Out Test

If the software is up to date, disconnect the PCU harness and use a multimeter to check for rogue voltage on pins that are supposed to be blank/empty according to the specific model's wiring diagram. Repair any shorted wires.

  6. Module Replacement

If the wiring is completely intact, no other codes are present, and the tractor is experiencing drivability issues, the PCU itself may have an internal short and require replacement.

Parts you might need

(1)
  • Powertrain Control Unit (PCU) / Transmission Controller

PCU part numbers vary heavily depending on the specific MXM model, transmission type, and cab configuration. Pull the specific part number directly from the CNH parts catalog using the machine's exact PIN/Serial Number.
