Case IH U100 – Transmission Control Module: Syncro potentiometer signal is out of range for F4 position

Indicates a calibration error where the Syncro potentiometer signal is out of range for F4 position. During the transmission calibration process, the controller monitors the position of the synchronizers via potentiometers. If the signal voltage from the F4/R2 synchronizer potentiometer falls outside the expected calibrated range when attempting to engage the F4 position, the U100 code is triggered and calibration is aborted.

   Enter the tractor's diagnostic H-Menu (specifically the synchronizer potentiometer check mode) to view the live percentage/voltage of the potentiometer movement. Observe the readings while manually commanding the synchronizer to see if the signal drops out, spikes, or fails to reach the required threshold for the F4 position.

   Inspect the wiring harness connecting the transmission controller to the F4/R2 synchronizer potentiometer and the F4 engagement solenoids. Look for chafed wires, open circuits, or shorts to ground.

   Test the F4 and R2 solenoids for proper resistance and ensure they are receiving voltage. A failed solenoid can prevent the synchronizer from physically moving to the F4 position, causing the potentiometer to read out of range.

   Secure the Machine

   Park the tractor on a clean, dry, and level surface. Ensure all pressure is relieved from the hydraulic circuits before removing any caps, covers, or valves.

   Resolve Wiring Issues

   If the diagnostic checks revealed a short or open circuit in the transmission harness, repair or replace the damaged wiring section.

   Replace the Potentiometer

   If the wiring is intact but the live H-Menu readings are erratic or out of range, the potentiometer is internally damaged. Locate the F4/R2 synchronizer potentiometer on the side of the transmission housing, disconnect the electrical connector, unbolt the sensor, and install a new OEM potentiometer.

   Inspect for Mechanical Binding

   If a new potentiometer does not resolve the issue, the transmission cover may need to be removed to inspect the driveline. Check the F4/R2 synchronizer assembly, shift forks, and rails for mechanical binding, excessive wear, or damage that physically prevents the synchronizer from moving fully into the F4 position.

   Recalibrate the Transmission

   After repairing the wiring, replacing the potentiometer, or fixing the mechanical bind, bring the transmission oil up to operating temperature and rerun the Full Power Shift Transmission calibration procedure.
