Case IH U101 – Transmission Control Module: R2 did not engage properly
Issue description
Transmission calibration or operational error meaning the controller attempted to engage Range 2 (R2), but the synchronizer failed to reach the expected physical position, or the sensor failed to report the correct position.
Applies to these machines
3 machines- Puma series (165, 180, 195, 210, 225)
- Maxxum series
- MXM series
Check the cause
Check Sensor Readings: Use the diagnostic connector or the instrument cluster's 'H' menu (H1 transmission controller menu) to view live data. Check the displayed synchronizer potentiometer reading during a calibration attempt for out of range, erratic, or dead voltage.
Inspect Wiring: Check the wiring harness and connectors leading to the R2 synchronizer potentiometer for continuity, shorts to ground, or damaged pins.
Test Hydraulics/Electrical: Test the electrical signal and hydraulic pressure to Clutch A and the dump valve to rule out a stuck valve or failed solenoid.
Mechanical Inspection: If the sensor and valves are functioning properly, inspect the transmission driveline for mechanical binding that is physically preventing the R2 synchronizer from moving.
Repair steps
Prepare machine
Park the tractor on a level surface, engage the parking brake, turn off the engine, and ensure all hydraulic pressure is relieved from the circuits.
Locate sensor
If diagnostics point to a failed sensor, locate the R2 synchronizer potentiometer on the exterior of the transmission housing.
Disconnect wiring
Disconnect the wiring harness from the potentiometer.
Remove sensor
Unbolt and remove the damaged synchronizer potentiometer.
Install new sensor
Install the new potentiometer and reconnect the wiring harness.
Replace valve/solenoid
If the issue was traced to Clutch A or the dump valve, replace the faulty solenoid/valve block on the transmission control valve assembly.
Perform calibration
After replacing the potentiometer or repairing the valve, you must perform a Full Power Shift (FPS) transmission calibration using the tractor's onboard diagnostic menu or a dealer service tool. The calibration must complete successfully without throwing the U101 code to confirm the repair.
