Case IH U105 – Transmission Control Unit (TCU): F4/R2 wrong neutral position
Issue description
The transmission controller is unable to verify the correct neutral resting position for the Forward 4 (F4) and Reverse 2 (R2) transmission synchroniser. The system relies on a rotary potentiometer to monitor the physical position of the synchroniser. If the voltage signal returned by this sensor does not match the pre-programmed neutral parameters during operation or calibration, the U105 code is triggered.

Check the cause
Check Sensor Readings via Calibration Menu: Enter the tractor's 'H Menu' (calibration mode) on the ADIC display. Navigate to the transmission synchroniser channels (typically Channel 61 for the F4/R2 sensor). Check the live potentiometer reading (R2: 300-1200, Neutral: 2050-2800, F4: 3550-4700). A reading of 0 or 12000 indicates a hard electrical fault.
Inspect the Wiring Harness: Locate connector X534 (Potentiometer Synchroniser F4 - R2) on the right-hand underside of the transmission housing.
Pinpoint Test the X534 Connector: Test for 5V at Pin 2 (Green wire, circuit 7525), ensure Pin 3 (Black/White wire, circuit 60) has good continuity to ground, and check Pin 1 (Violet wire, circuit 7970) for continuity back to the transmission controller.
Mechanical Check: If the electrical circuit and sensor are functioning properly, check if the transmission synchroniser is mechanically bound and unable to physically return to the neutral detent.
Repair steps
Safety First
Park the tractor on a level surface, turn off the engine, and ensure all pressure is relieved from the hydraulic circuits. Apply the parking brake.
Locate the Sensor
Find the F4/R2 synchroniser potentiometer on the right-hand side/underside of the transmission block.
Remove the Sensor
Disconnect the X534 wiring harness connector. Remove the retaining bolts holding the potentiometer to the transmission housing and carefully extract the sensor.
Inspect the Drive Tang
Look inside the transmission port to ensure the mechanical tang/slot that drives the potentiometer is not broken or severely worn.
Install the New Sensor
Fit the replacement potentiometer, ensuring the sensor tang aligns correctly with the synchroniser shaft. Fasten the mounting bolts and reconnect the X534 harness.
Recalibrate the Transmission
Run the Full Power Shift Transmission (FPS) calibration procedure via the tractor's display so the ECU can learn the new sensor's exact voltage values for F4, R2, and Neutral.
Mechanical Teardown
If the sensor replacement and calibration fail (or if the sensor tang was sheared off), the tractor will require a transmission teardown to repair the internal F4/R2 synchroniser hub/fork assembly.
