Case IH U108 – Transmission Controller (TCU): Damper torque not readable
Issue description
This code indicates that the control module is not receiving a valid signal from the damper torque sensor, which monitors the torque transmitted through the flywheel damper (slip clutch).

Check the cause
Check the wiring harness and connectors leading to the transmission/engine torque sensor for damage, bent pins, or loose connections (addresses wiring problem).
Inspect the sensor itself for physical damage or debris interference (addresses damaged sensor).
Attempt to recalibrate the damper torque sensor before replacing any parts (addresses lost calibration value).
Verify that the flywheel damper was installed correctly and that the sensor is properly aligned, especially if recently serviced (addresses wrong damper installation).
Repair steps
Warm up transmission oil
Ensure the transmission oil is warmed up (typically above 60°C / 140°F).
Enter calibration menu
Enter the transmission calibration menu (H-menu) on the tractor's display.
Navigate to calibration channel
Navigate through the channels using the 'up' and 'down' keys until you reach the damper torque calibration channel (often displayed as Ch 12 or 'dt').
Initiate calibration
Press and hold the downshift button while the display shows 'dt'.
Observe engine speed
The engine speed will automatically increase and set to 1200 RPM.
Hold button
Keep holding; the display will remain on 'dt' while the procedure is in progress.
Complete calibration
Upon completion, the display will show the calibrated torque value (a number between 11 and 244) followed by 'End', and the engine speed will return to idle.
Save calibration
Cycle the key to save the calibration.
Split tractor
If calibration fails or parts are damaged, split the tractor between the engine and transmission to access the flywheel damper assembly.
Disconnect drive shaft
Remove the drive shaft shield and disconnect the drive shaft from the flywheel damper.
Remove faulty parts
Remove the faulty damper and/or torque sensor.
Install new damper
Install the new flywheel damper. Torque the mounting bolts to OEM specifications (e.g., 32 Nm / 24 lb-ft for Farmall models, or 70–94 Nm / 52–69 lb-ft for larger Magnum/Trident models).
Reassemble tractor
Reassemble the tractor components.
Recalibrate damper torque
You must perform the Damper Torque Calibration (Phase 1) after installing a new damper or sensor.
