U112

Case IH U112 – Transmission Controller: PTO speed select cable stalled while extending

Issue description

This is a calibration error code that occurs during the Two-speed Power Take-Off (PTO) calibration procedure. It indicates that the system attempted to extend the PTO speed select cable, but the mechanism stalled before reaching its target.

Applies to these machines

  • Case IH Puma 125
  • Case IH Puma 165
  • Case IH Puma 180
  • Case IH Puma 195
  • Case IH Puma 210
  • Case IH Puma 225 CVX
  • Case IH Magnum MX210
  • Case IH Magnum MX230
  • Case IH Magnum MX255
  • Case IH Magnum MX285
  • Case IH Magnum 7100 Series
  • Case IH Magnum 7200 Series
  • Case IH Magnum 8900 Series
  • Case IH Steiger Series
  • Case IH MX/TG Series

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the Cable Connection: Verify that the PTO speed select cable is correctly connected and properly adjusted in the neutral position.

  2. Check for Binding: Inspect the physical routing of the PTO speed select cable. Look for kinks, severe bends, or debris that could cause the cable to jam while extending.

  3. Inspect the Sensor: Verify that the PTO speed sensor is securely plugged into the wiring harness and that the connector pins are not corroded or damaged.

  4. Access Diagnostics: Connect the special diagnostic tool (Part # 380000843) to the diagnostic socket. Turn the key ON and use the 'h', 'm', and 'dimming' buttons on the instrument cluster to navigate to the 'HH MENU' -> H1 -> Transmission symbol (XA controller) to monitor the system.

Repair steps

  1. Resolve the Mechanical/Electrical Fault

If the cable is disconnected or misaligned, reconnect it correctly in the neutral position. If the cable is jammed or seized internally, remove and replace the PTO speed select cable. If the sensor is disconnected, plug it back in.

  2. Initiate PTO Calibration

Once the physical repair is made, you must recalibrate the Shiftable PTO to clear the 'U' code.

  3. Calibrate Neutral Position

Through the HH Menu, initiate the calibration. The lower central display will show 'P13'. The system will calibrate the neutral position of the PTO. Wait for the calibration value to be displayed.

  4. Calibrate Optional Speed

The display will change to 'P2'. The engine speed will automatically increase and set to 1200 RPM.

  5. Engage PTO

Start the PTO using the cab switch on the RH armrest console (lift the collar while pressing the top). A warning light will illuminate.

  6. Complete Calibration

The display will show 'P22' while the PTO ratio is determined. Once calculated, the optional speed value will display for five seconds, followed by 'End'. The engine will return to idle and the PTO will stop automatically.

  7. Save Values

Turn the ignition key switch OFF to store the new calibration values in the EEPROM.
