U114

Case IH U114 – EPL (Electronic Park Lock) / VCU (Vehicle Control Unit): Hand brake applied

Issue description

The system logs this code when it detects an anomaly with the handbrake circuit or its configuration. This is triggered by a cut or damaged blue cable on the handbrake switch connector, a mismatch between the hardwired handbrake switch status and the VCU_HB_SWITCH parameter broadcasted in the VCU2EPL CAN message, or the hand brake being incorrectly configured as 'present' in the H3 diagnostic menu.

Applies to these machines

  • Puma series (115 through 230, including CVX models)
  • Maxxum
  • MXM
  • MXU
  • Magnum
  • Farmall series

Check the cause

  1. Visually inspect the handbrake switch connector, specifically checking the blue wire for cuts, chafing, or terminal pull-out.

  2. Using a diagnostic tool, monitor the VCU_HB_SWITCH parameter in the VCU2EPL CAN message to verify if the VCU is receiving the correct state from the switch.

  3. Connect diagnostic tool (special tool 380000843) to access the H3 menu and verify if the handbrake is correctly configured as present/not present based on the tractor's actual build.

Repair steps

  1. Secure the Machine

Park the tractor on a level surface, turn off the engine, and ensure all hydraulic pressure is relieved.

  2. Inspect and Repair Wiring

Access the handbrake switch. If the blue cable on the connector is cut or damaged, strip back the damaged section and repair the wire using an appropriate OEM-grade splice or replace the connector pigtail.

  3. Test the Switch

If the wiring is intact, test the mechanical handbrake switch for continuity. The switch should properly open and close its contacts when the handbrake is engaged and disengaged. If the switch fails continuity testing, replace it.

  4. Software Configuration

If the wiring and switch are functioning perfectly, the issue is likely a software mismatch. Turn the key start switch ON and enter the H Menu diagnostics. Navigate to the H3 menu and ensure the handbrake configuration matches the physical hardware.

  5. Clear and Verify

Clear the fault codes from the EPL and VCU modules. Cycle the handbrake multiple times and verify that the U114 code does not return.

Parts you might need

(3)
  • Parking Brake Switch / Handbrake Switch

    84142375

Primary for Puma/Maxxum/T7. Mechanical contact switch with a cable and plug connection.

  • Parking Brake Switch / Handbrake Switch

    116256A1

    Alternative for some Farmall/JX models.

  • Generic electrical repair wire (Blue) and heat-shrink butt connectors

Use if repairing a cut wire.
