U117

Case IH U117 – XA Module: APP position too low

Issue description

During the EPL stroke calibration, the system measures both the applied ("APP") and released ("REL") positions. The U117 code triggers when the recorded applied position is lower than the acceptable threshold. This is primarily caused by high system stiffness (mechanical interferences or binding) or wrong mechanical installation of the EPL.

Applies to these machines

  • Puma 140 CVX
  • Puma 165 CVX
  • Puma 175 CVX
  • Puma 180 CVX
  • Puma 185 CVX
  • Puma 195 CVX
  • Puma 200 CVX
  • Puma 210 CVX
  • Puma 225 CVX
  • Puma 230 CVX

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the EPL transmission lever, linkage, and braking pads for excessive wear, stiffness, or physical obstructions

  2. Verify the EPL actuator is mounted correctly and the mechanical adjustment of the transmission lever is within spec

  3. Attempt to recalibrate the system in diagnostic mode before tearing down mechanical components

Repair steps

  1. Mechanical Inspection & Adjustment

Access the Electronic Park Lock actuator assembly. Disconnect the linkage and manually actuate the park lock lever on the transmission to feel for excessive stiffness or binding.

  2. Lubricate / Free Up Linkage

If mechanical interference is found, clean, lubricate, or replace the binding linkage components or worn braking pads.

  3. Re-calibrate the EPL (Stroke Calibration)

Enter the diagnostic "H" menu using the diagnostic test switch (special tool 380000843) located in the cab's right-hand rear pillar. Navigate to the H1 menu via the ADIC, selecting the EPL (XA) sub-menu. The display will show "CAL". Use the "h" and "m" buttons to select "SC" (Stroke Calibration). Follow the prompts. When successful, the display will show "APP" followed by the applied value, and "REL" followed by the released value. Key OFF to store the values.

  4. Replace the Actuator

If the mechanical linkage is completely free, but the U117 error code persists or the EPL fails to calibrate, the EPL actuator assembly itself has failed internally and must be removed and replaced.
