U118

Case IH U118 – EPL (Electronic Park Lock) / VCU (Vehicle Control Unit): Error codes active preventing completion of initialization procedure

Issue description

High recovery level error code is being activated. The tractor's system is trying to run an initialization or calibration procedure, but it is being blocked by a primary, more severe active fault code.

Applies to these machines

  • Puma Series 125
  • Puma Series 140
  • Puma Series 165
  • Puma Series 180
  • Puma Series 195
  • Puma Series 210
  • Puma Series 225 CVX
  • Magnum Series MX210
  • Magnum Series MX230
  • Magnum Series MX255
  • Magnum Series MX285
  • Farmall Series 115U
  • Steiger Series

Check the cause

  1. Access On-Board Diagnostics via the tractor's 'H menu' or connect the CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST)

  2. Read active faults in the EPL or VCU modules, ignoring U118 to focus on other active codes

  3. Identify the primary fault, such as high-level recovery codes (e.g., sensor voltage out of range, short circuits, or CAN bus communication errors) that are active concurrently

Repair steps

  1. Connect Diagnostic Tool

Plug in the CNH EST diagnostic lead or navigate to the HH menu on the vehicle's display.

  2. Diagnose Primary Code

Retrieve the primary high-level fault code that is triggering the U118 block.

  3. Repair the Root Cause

Perform the required electrical repair, mechanical adjustment, or part replacement dictated by the primary fault code.

  4. Clear Stored Codes

Once the primary repair is complete, navigate to the universal controller's diagnostic menu. Select the option to erase stored fault codes (often done by holding the 'm'/Decr key until the display scrolls through EE and beeps).

  5. Restart Initialization

Cycle the key switch to the OFF position, wait for the system to power down, turn the key back ON, and re-attempt the EPL calibration/initialization procedure.
