Case IH U120 – Universal Controller (HK), Electronic Hydraulic Remote (EHR) valve controller, or Full Power Shift (FPS) / CVT Transmission ECU: Inclinometer self-test failed.

Issue description

The inclinometer is broken. The inclinometer (or inclination sensor) is a dual-axis electronic sensor that measures the lateral (side-to-side) and longitudinal (fore-aft) chassis angle of the machine. When the sensor fails its internal self-check, it can no longer provide accurate angular position metrics to the control modules, disabling automated frame adjustments, suspension leveling, or transmission safety interlocks.

Check the cause

  1. Verify the machine is parked on completely flat, smooth ground to ensure accurate resting angle.

  2. Remove any rear attachments or heavy implements that might be altering the chassis resting angle.

  3. Verify that the correct set of wheels/tires is installed and that tire pressures are even, as mismatched wheels will physically tilt the machine.

  4. Check the physical mounting of the inclinometer to ensure it is securely bolted to the chassis/mainframe and has not vibrated loose.

  5. Inspect the 3-wire polyurethane conductor cable and 5-Volt reference circuit for open circuits, shorts, or corrosion at the connector.

  6. Use the Case IH diagnostic tool to enter the 'H' or 'HH' menu to read the live potentiometer/inclinometer voltage to see if it is completely dead or just out of range.

Repair steps

  1. Locate the Sensor

    The inclinometer is typically mounted directly to the central mainframe chassis, the front suspended axle, or (on combines) the self-leveling sieve/cleaning shoe assembly.

  2. Removal

    Turn off the machine and disconnect the battery. Unplug the 3-pin electrical connector from the sensor. Remove the mounting bolts securing the sensor to the bracket.

  3. Installation

    Mount the new inclinometer in the exact same orientation as the old one. Torque the mounting hardware to OEM specifications to prevent vibration. Reconnect the electrical harness.

  4. Calibration

    A new inclinometer must be calibrated. Park the tractor/combine on perfectly level ground. Access the machine's calibration menu (via the diagnostic tool or in-cab monitor) and initiate the 'Inclinometer Calibration Procedure' to set the new zero-degree baseline.

  5. Clear Codes

    Clear the U120 fault code and restart the machine to ensure the self-test passes.
