Case IH U123 – Transmission Control Unit (TCU) or Electronic Draft Control (EDC) module: Vehicle moving

A calibration error code triggered when a stationary calibration routine is attempted but the system detects vehicle motion. This is caused either by the vehicle physically moving or a failed vehicle speed sensor (or shorted wiring) sending a false speed signal.

   Verify physical state: Ensure the tractor is parked on level ground, the parking brake is fully engaged, and the machine is 100% stationary before attempting calibration again.

   Monitor live data: Access the on-board diagnostic display or connect the CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to monitor the Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS). If the tractor is parked but shows a speed greater than zero, the sensor or wiring is at fault.

   Inspect wiring: Disconnect the vehicle speed sensor connector and inspect pins for water ingress, corrosion, or damage. Check the harness for continuity back to the TCU and ensure there is no short-to-power or short-to-ground.

   Prepare the Machine

   Park the tractor on a flat surface, turn off the engine, remove the key, and engage the parking brake. Ensure all hydraulic pressure is relieved.

   Locate the Sensor

   Locate the transmission vehicle speed sensor, which is typically mounted on the side or rear of the transmission housing (reading the output shaft speed).

   Remove the Faulty Sensor

   Disconnect the electrical harness from the sensor. Remove the retaining bolt securing the sensor to the transmission housing. Carefully pull the sensor straight out (have a shop rag ready, as a small amount of transmission fluid may weep from the port).

   Install the New Sensor

   Lubricate the O-ring on the new speed sensor with clean transmission fluid. Insert it into the housing and tighten the retaining bolt to the OEM torque specification.

   Reconnect and Clear Codes

   Reconnect the electrical harness. Turn the ignition on, access the diagnostic menu, and clear the stored U123 fault code.

   Recalibrate

   Restart the engine and re-initiate the transmission or EDC calibration procedure. Ensure the routine completes successfully without the U123 code returning.
