Case IH U125 – Transmission / Electronic Control Module: Speed sensor error

The control module is not receiving the expected rotational speed data to monitor or calibrate the PTO. Possible failures include no signal from the PTO speed sensor, no engine speed signal, or the PTO not started.

   Verify PTO Operation: Ensure the PTO is actually commanded to start and mechanically engages. If the PTO clutch is slipping or failing to engage mechanically, the sensor will correctly report no speed.

   Check Engine Speed Signal: Verify that the instrument cluster/dash is displaying the engine RPM correctly. If the tractor is not registering engine speed, the controller will flag U125 because it cannot calculate the PTO-to-Engine speed ratio.

   Inspect Wiring and Connections: Visually inspect the wiring harness leading to the PTO speed sensor at the rear of the transmission housing. Look for severed wires, rubbed insulation, or corroded connector pins.

   Test the Sensor Signal: Use a multimeter or an oscilloscope to check if the PTO speed sensor is generating a pulse signal when the PTO shaft is turning.

   Resolve Prerequisite Signals

   If the engine RPM is not displaying, diagnose and repair the engine speed sensor circuit first. If the PTO is not physically starting, diagnose the PTO engagement solenoid or clutch pack.

   Access the PTO Speed Sensor

   Locate the PTO speed sensor on the rear transmission/PTO housing.

   Replace the Sensor

   If wiring is intact and the PTO is physically turning but no signal is generated, disconnect the sensor harness. Unbolt and remove the faulty PTO speed sensor. Install the new sensor and torque to OEM specifications.

   Clear Fault Codes

   Connect a diagnostic tool or use the tractor's onboard "H Menu" (specifically the HC menu) to clear the stored U125 error code from the EEPROM.

   Recalibrate

   Run the ESPTO calibration procedure to ensure the new sensor is reading accurately and the controller recognizes the PTO speeds.
