U149

Case IH U149 – MTA CCM (Chassis Control Module) or MVCU (Micro Vehicle Control Unit): Range lever not in neutral position

Issue description

This code indicates that the electronic control system expects the transmission range lever to be in the neutral position (e.g., during startup, calibration, or specific operational checks), but the position sensor/switch is reporting that it is engaged in a gear or out of the neutral detent.

Applies to these machines

Check the cause

  1. Physically verify the range lever is seated in the neutral detent and check for debris or obstructions in the shift console preventing full travel.

  2. Check the range lever position switch adjustment to ensure it hasn't vibrated loose and is being physically depressed when the lever moves into neutral.

  3. Perform a continuity test on the range lever position switch using a multimeter to verify it shows continuity when actuated and an open circuit when not.

  4. Inspect the wiring harness from the range lever switch to the CCM/MVCU for chafing, rodent damage, or loose connector pins.

Repair steps

  1. Preparation

Park the tractor on a level surface, place the transmission control lever in the neutral position, shut off the engine, and engage the parking brake.

  2. Access the Switch

Depending on the cab configuration, remove the trim panel or lower console cover surrounding the range lever to expose the shift linkage and position switch.

  3. Adjust the Switch

If functional but misaligned: Loosen the mounting screws/locknut holding the limit switch. Adjust the bracket so the switch plunger is fully depressed when the lever clicks into neutral. Tighten the hardware and re-test.

  4. Replace the Switch

If faulty: Unplug the electrical connector, unbolt the faulty switch, and install the replacement. Adjust the new switch to ensure proper engagement in neutral.

  5. Clear the Code

The U149 code is stored in the electronic control module's non-volatile memory. Access the on-board diagnostics menu (e.g., the "H8 – Clear Non-volatile Memory" menu on Farmall/CCM models) to clear the stored calibration values and error codes.

  6. Test

Cycle the key, shift through the ranges, and return to neutral to ensure the code does not return and the tractor recognizes the neutral state.

Parts you might need

(1)
  • Position Switch / Limit Switch
