u156

Case IH u156 – EHR: Pilot head timed out.

Issue description

This is a calibration and operational error indicating that the waiting time for the electronic pilot head (the actuator on top of the hydraulic remote valve) has expired. The system logs this code because either the internal sensor did not detect the sliding movement of the hydraulic spool valve when commanded, or the control module did not receive the expected CAN bus calibration messages from the pilot head.

Applies to these machines

  • Magnum 210
  • Magnum 225
  • Magnum 235-340
  • Magnum 310
  • Steiger Series
  • Quadtrac Series
  • Puma 180-260
  • Maxxum Series

Check the cause

  1. Retry Calibration: Repeat the EHR valve calibration procedure. If the U156 code persists during the calibration, proceed to hardware checks.

  2. Electrical Inspection: Check the wiring harness and connector at the affected remote valve pilot head for corrosion, backed-out pins, or wire chafing. Ensure the pilot head is receiving 12V power and CAN bus communication.

  3. Hydraulic Pressure Check: Verify that the tractor is producing adequate low standby pressure and deadhead pressure. If the valve does not have sufficient hydraulic pressure, the spool cannot physically move.

  4. Mechanical Binding: Check if the pilot head retaining screws were previously over-torqued. Over-tightening the cartridge/solenoid can swedge the housing down and physically bind the spool so it cannot move.

Repair steps

  1. Relieve hydraulic pressure

Park the tractor on a level surface, turn off the engine, and relieve all hydraulic pressure from the system by working the remote levers.

  2. Clean work area

Thoroughly clean the area around the affected rear remote valve to prevent dirt from entering the hydraulic system.

  3. Disconnect electrical harness

Disconnect the electrical harness connector from the faulty pilot head.

  4. Remove retaining screws

Remove the retaining screws (typically M5 hex socket screws) securing the pilot head to the remote valve body.

  5. Remove pilot head

Lift the pilot head assembly off the valve body.

  6. Inspect spool and replace filter

Inspect the exposed valve spool for heavy wear, scoring, or debris. Replace the small 100-150 micron filter screen located under the pilot head.

  7. Install new pilot head

Install the new pilot head assembly onto the valve body. Note: Tighten the retaining screws carefully to OEM spec (typically around 9 ft-lbs max). Do not over-torque, or you will bind the spool.

  8. Reconnect electrical harness

    Reconnect the electrical harness.

  9. Valve Reassignment

Turn the key ON and access the tractor's "H" menu (or use the Case IH EST diagnostic tool) to reassign/renumber the remote valves. The EHR controller must be programmed to recognize the new pilot head's unique CAN address.

  10. Calibration

Perform the remote valve calibration procedure so the new pilot head learns the full travel limits of the spool.
