Case IH U159 – Electronic Park Lock (EPL) controller: Inclinometer reading direction not defined.
Issue description
This is a configuration error rather than a hardware failure. The fault indicates that the Electronic Park Lock (EPL) controller does not know which direction the inclinometer (tilt/level sensor) is reading because its configuration parameter has not been set. The system explicitly flags the cause as: 'EPL's Channel 3 on H3 menu is still on default value: Not Defined.'
Applies to these machines
3 machines- Case IH Puma Series (165, 180, 195, 210, 225 CVX)
- Case IH Farmall Series (115U Efficient Power, 40-45-50 with CVT transmission)
- Case IH Steiger Series
Check the cause
Verify that the tractor has battery power and that the EPL controller is communicating on the CAN bus.
Ensure you have the Case IH special diagnostic lead/tool (Part Number 380000843) to access the locked 'HH' on-board diagnostic menus.
Repair steps
Connect the Diagnostic Tool
Plug the special diagnostic connector (PN 380000843) into the tractor's diagnostic socket.
Power On
Turn the key start switch to the ON position (do not start the engine unless specified by the specific model's manual). The dot matrix display on the instrument cluster will show 'HH MENU' to indicate diagnostic mode is active.
Navigate to the H3 Menu
Use the instrument cluster buttons (typically 'up', 'down', and 'menu', or 'h', 'm', and 'dimming') to navigate to the H3 Menu (Configuration Menu).
Select the EPL Controller
Select the transmission/EPL symbol on the U1 controller.
Configure Channel 3
The upper section of the display will show 'Ch_ _'. Scroll to Channel 3. You will see it is currently set to the default value ('Not Defined').
Set the Value
Change the setting from 'Not Defined' to the correct defined parameter for your specific tractor's inclinometer orientation (refer to the specific model's service manual for the exact value, usually a simple toggle to 'Defined' or a specific directional axis).
Save and Exit
Save the configuration (it will be stored in the EEPROM). Use the 'escape' key to back out of the menus.
Clear Codes
If necessary, navigate to the HC menu to erase stored error codes without erasing your new calibration information. Turn the key off, remove the diagnostic tool, and restart the tractor to verify the U159 code has cleared.
