Case IH U161 – Instrument Control Unit (ICU3) or Universal Controller: Incorrect sequence detected when renumbering the mid-mount valves

Triggered when the renumbering (calibration) procedure for the Electro-Hydraulic Remote (EHR) valves is initiated but performed out of order, interrupted, or not finalized. The most common cause is failing to complete the final step (Step 9) of the procedure, which saves the configuration to the memory.

   Check CAN-BUS connections to ensure all mid-mount and rear EHR valves are securely plugged into the wiring harness.

   Check for other active electrical fault codes (e.g., open circuits or CAN-BUS communication errors) that might interrupt communication.

   Verify you have the correct diagnostic jumper tool (Case IH Special Tool No. 380000488 or 380000843) required to access the tractor's H-Menu.

   Connect Diagnostic Tool

   Connect the special diagnostic tool (380000488 or 380000843) to the diagnostic connector (usually a black connector located beneath the Electronic Draft Control operator panel).

   Enter Calibration Mode

   Turn the ignition key switch to the ON position. The instrument panel dot matrix display will show “HH” or “HH MENU” to indicate that the calibration menu has been activated.

   Navigate to EHR Renumbering

   Use the menu 'up' and 'down' keys to navigate the controller list. Select the EHR controller and navigate to the Valve Renumbering sub-menu (often labeled as 'HL').

   Perform the Sequence

   Actuate the remote valve levers in the exact order specified by your specific model's service manual (typically starting from Valve 1 through the mid-mounts).

   Complete Step 9 (Crucial)

   You must complete the procedure for the entire set of valves in its entirety. Pay strict attention to Step 9 (the final step), which requires you to save the configuration to the EEPROM.

   Exit and Cycle Power

   Once the display confirms the calibration is saved, turn the ignition key OFF to lock the values into the memory. Remove the diagnostic tool.

   Turn the tractor back on and verify that the U161 code has cleared and the mid-mount valves operate correctly.
