Case IH U22 – Transmission Control Module (TCM) / Transmission ECU: Engine speed over 1400 RPM (Decrease engine speed)
Issue description
A procedural error code that occurs during the tractor's electronic transmission/clutch calibration process when the engine speed is set too high (above 1300-1400 RPM). It can also indicate the control module is not receiving a valid RPM signal from the engine speed sensor or flywheel speed sensor.
Applies to these machines
6 machines- JXC
- MXM Series
- Maxxum Series
- Puma Series
- Magnum Series
- JX Series
Check the cause
Verify Calibration Mode: Confirm that the tractor is currently in transmission calibration mode, as this code generally only appears during an active calibration attempt.
Check the Dash Tachometer: Look at the instrument cluster while the engine is running. A steady RPM indicates operator error regarding throttle position. A reading of '0' or wild fluctuations indicates the TCM cannot see the engine speed.
Check the CAN Bus / Wiring: Use the transmission module's diagnostic menu (H9 or HE menu) to see if engine speed is being detected. Check for an open circuit between the engine speed sensor and the instrument cluster/TCM.
Repair steps
Warm up transmission
Start the tractor and bring the transmission oil up to operating temperature (above 10°C / 50°F, otherwise code U19 will appear).
Enter calibration mode
Enter the transmission calibration mode (H1 menu).
Decrease engine speed
If the display flashes U22, use the hand throttle to decrease the engine speed until it drops to approximately 1200 RPM.
Proceed with calibration
Once the RPM is within the correct window, the U22 code will disappear, and the calibration will automatically proceed to the next step (usually starting with Clutch A).
Inspect sensor and wiring
If adjusting the throttle does not clear the code and the dash shows no RPM: Locate the engine speed sensor / flywheel speed sensor on the engine block. Inspect the wiring harness and connector for damage.
Replace sensor
If the wiring is intact, replace the engine speed sensor.
