Case IH U25 – Transmission Control Module (TCM): Gear selector in neutral - Place gear lever into first gear

Triggered when the transmission controller detects that the gear or range selector is in the neutral position during a procedure (such as a transmission calibration) or operation that requires the tractor to be in gear. The underlying condition is usually operator error, a misadjusted mechanical linkage, or a failed position switch.

   Verify the operator has actually moved the range/gear lever out of neutral and into first gear (or the requested range).

   Enter the H5 switch diagnostics mode via the instrument cluster/transmission module to see the live state of the transmission switches.

   Inspect the external gear linkage, levers, and relay rods for excessive play, binding, or being out of adjustment.

   Adjust the Gear Linkage

   If the physical gear lever feels loose or fails to fully engage the detent, adjust the external levers and relay rods to the correct specifications outlined in the service manual.

   Test the Switch via H5 Menu

   With the tractor on, use the H5 switch diagnostics. Shift the lever in and out of gear. If the display does not register a change in state, the switch or its circuit is the culprit.

   Inspect Wiring

   Check the wiring harness leading to the low range switch on the transmission housing for breaks, corrosion, or disconnected plugs.

   Replace the Switch

   If the linkage is perfectly adjusted and the wiring is intact but the switch fails to register in the H5 diagnostics, the low range switch is internally faulty and must be replaced.

   Recalibrate

   After replacing the switch or adjusting the linkage, clear the fault codes and restart the transmission calibration procedure (if the code was triggered during calibration).
