Case IH U29 – Transmission Control Module (TCM): C4 calibration value is too low
Issue description
During the transmission's automated calibration process, the initial test pressure applied to the C4 clutch (or Clutch A) was sufficient to lug the engine, causing the engine RPM to drop too soon. The calibration process expects a specific pressure threshold to be reached before the engine speed decreases by 50 RPM; if it drops prematurely, the U29 code is triggered.
Applies to these machines
6 machines- Maxxum
- Case IH Maxxum Series
- Case IH Puma Series
- Case IH Farmall Series
- Case IH Magnum Series
- Case IH Steiger Series
Check the cause
Ensure the engine speed (throttle) was not manually adjusted while the calibration was completing, as this will instantly trigger a U29
Check the C4 Pulse-Width Modulation (PWM) solenoid valve for sticking, dirt ingress, or electrical circuit issues
Use the tractor's 'H' Menu (specifically H2 for calibration review or H9 for potentiometer signals) to monitor the clutch fill times and solenoid hydraulic pressure circuits
Repair steps
Clean/Replace the Solenoid
Locate the transmission control valve block. Remove the PWM solenoid valve responsible for the C4 clutch. Inspect it for debris or sticking. Clean the valve thoroughly or replace it if it fails electrical/hydraulic testing.
Mechanical Inspection
If the PWM valve is functioning perfectly, the issue is likely a mechanical fault within the Clutch 'A' (C4) assembly itself (e.g., warped clutch plates, leaking seals, or mechanical failure breaking the torque path). This requires splitting the tractor/transmission for a clutch pack rebuild.
Recalibrate
Once the solenoid is replaced or the clutch pack is repaired, you must perform the Transmission Auto Calibration procedure. Park on a flat surface, apply the handbrake, and ensure the transmission oil is up to operating temperature. Enter the H-menu calibration mode. Allow the system to calibrate the synchros, transmission clutches, and flywheel torque sensor. Ensure the engine RPM is kept steady throughout the process.
