Case IH U33 – Transmission Control Unit (TCU): Hand Brake Not Applied
Issue description
This is typically a precondition error rather than a hardware failure. It is triggered when the operator attempts to enter the transmission calibration mode, but the system detects that the parking brake is not engaged.
Applies to these machines
5 machines- MXM
- MXM Series (120, 130, 140, 155, 175, 190)
- Puma Series (115 through 240)
- Maxxum Series
- MXU Series
Check the cause
Ensure the handbrake lever is physically fully engaged before initiating the transmission calibration sequence
Locate the handbrake switch near the parking brake lever linkage and test for continuity using a multimeter when the brake is applied
Inspect the wiring harness and plug connection from the handbrake switch to the transmission controller for open circuits, chafed wires, or corroded pins
Repair steps
Park the tractor on level ground, place the shuttle in neutral, and block the front and rear wheels.
Fully apply the handbrake.
If the U33 code still appears when attempting calibration, access the handbrake switch.
Disconnect the switch's cable plug and test the switch mechanically and electrically.
If the switch fails the continuity test, remove the faulty switch and install a replacement OEM switch.
Reconnect the wiring harness and clear the stored fault codes.
Often done by depressing the 'Reset' button on the programmable display.
Restart Calibration.
With the operator in the seat, depress and hold the clutch pedal. With the key in the OFF position, depress and hold both the transmission upshift and downshift buttons. Start the engine, release the buttons to initiate calibration mode, and release the clutch pedal.
