U36

Case IH U36 – Transmission Control Module (TCM) / Transmission ECU: Maximum Allowed Clutch Calibration Value Exceeded

Issue description

The electrical current value sent to the clutch solenoid has exceeded the maximum permitted limit without successfully lugging (reducing) the engine RPM down. This indicates that the clutch is slipping or failing to engage fully when commanded, preventing the system from finding the correct calibration bite point.

Applies to these machines

  • Puma/Mid Range Magnum
  • Maxxum
  • MXM
  • Farmall
  • Case IH MXM Series
  • Case IH Puma Series
  • Case IH MX Magnum Series

Check the cause

  1. Verify that the tractor's brakes are holding properly. Move the vehicle slightly forward to reposition the internal transmission components, then try the calibration again.

  2. Check the transmission for a low hydraulic pressure fault, which can prevent the clutch from engaging fully.

  3. Check for an ECU high-side driver power supply failure. Inspect the 12V supply fuses to the Transmission ECU.

  4. Test the specific clutch PWM (Pulse Width Modulation) solenoid valve for electrical faults or mechanical sticking.

Repair steps

  1. Reposition and Retry

Move the tractor slightly forward, apply the brakes firmly, and attempt the calibration again. Sometimes gear bind prevents successful calibration.

  2. Inspect Fuses

Locate the Transmission ECU fuse block and check the 12V power supply fuses. Replace any blown fuses.

  3. Check Hydraulic Pressure

Connect a pressure gauge to the transmission test ports. If the hydraulic pressure is below spec, troubleshoot the hydraulic pump, filters, or internal leaks.

  4. Replace the PWM Valve

If the fuses and hydraulic pressure are good, the fault is likely a defective PWM solenoid valve on the affected clutch pack. Remove and replace the faulty PWM valve.

  5. Clear Codes and Recalibrate

Once the repair is made, clear the U36 error code.

  6. Run Calibration Routine

Ensure transmission oil temperature is between 20°C and 50°C, apply the parking brake, turn off the air conditioning and all electrical/hydraulic services, set engine speed to 1200 RPM, and initiate the transmission calibration sequence to verify the repair.

Parts you might need

(3)
  • Transmission Clutch PWM Solenoid Valve

OEM part numbers vary heavily depending on whether the machine is an MXM, Puma, or Magnum. Look up the specific clutch pack valve in the CNH parts catalog for the exact tractor serial number.

  • Standard Automotive/Blade Fuses

For the ECU 12V power supply.

  • Transmission Hydraulic Filters / Fluid

Generic maintenance items if low hydraulic pressure is caused by a restriction.
