U37

Case IH U37 – Transmission Control Unit (TCU) or Multi-function Control Module (XCM / ADIC): Calibration value too low

Issue description

During the transmission clutch calibration procedure, the engine RPM dropped too soon before the expected calibration pressure or fill time was reached. This indicates premature clutch engagement, a sticking solenoid, or an engine speed drop caused by an external factor.

Applies to these machines

  • Farmall
  • Maxxum MXM 120
  • Maxxum MXM 130
  • Maxxum MXM 140
  • Maxxum MXM 155
  • Maxxum MXM 175
  • Maxxum MXM 190
  • Farmall 75C
  • Farmall 115C
  • Farmall 115U
  • Puma
  • CVX

Check the cause

  1. Verify the transmission oil is at the correct operating temperature (typically between 10°C and 60°C, or above 50°C).

  2. Verify the engine RPM is set correctly for the calibration procedure (usually 1200 RPM ± 50) and the engine is running smoothly without bogging down.

  3. Ensure the tractor is completely stationary, the handbrake is applied, the clutch pedal is fully released, and the shuttle lever is in the Forward position.

  4. Perform a solenoid swap test by swapping the proportional solenoid valve of the failing clutch with a known-good clutch to see if the U37 fault follows the solenoid.

Repair steps

  1. Warm Up

Operate the tractor until the transmission oil reaches the specified calibration temperature.

  2. Enter Calibration Mode

Enter the transmission calibration mode (H1 menu) and set the engine speed to 1200 RPM.

  3. Isolate the Clutch

Attempt to calibrate the clutches (A, B, C, D, E) one by one. Note exactly which clutch triggers the U37 code.

  4. Inspect Wiring

Inspect the wiring harness and connector going to the failing clutch's proportional solenoid valve. Look for chafing, corrosion, or poor pin fitment that could cause erratic voltage drops.

  5. Replace Solenoid

If the solenoid swap test proves the solenoid is sticking or failing, replace the transmission clutch solenoid valve.

  6. Mechanical Inspection

If the solenoid and wiring are good, the transmission must be opened to inspect the affected clutch pack. Look for warped clutch plates, damaged seals, or mechanical binding that is causing the clutch to drag prematurely.

  7. Recalibrate

After replacing the solenoid or repairing the clutch pack, clear the stored fault codes and successfully complete the H1 transmission calibration procedure to save the new fill values to the controller's non-volatile memory.
