U37

Case IH U37 – Transmission Controller (TCU): Engine RPM Dropped Too Soon

Issue description

This error occurs during the transmission/clutch auto-calibration procedure. During calibration, the system engages the clutches to learn their fill times and engagement points. If the engine RPM lugs down (drops) before the expected calibration parameters are met, the system aborts the process and logs this code.

Check the cause

  1. Ensure the tractor is completely stationary, the handbrake is applied, and the wheels are chocked

  2. Check that the Mid and Rear transmission speed sensor connectors have not been accidentally swapped

  3. Verify that the transmission has adequate hydraulic pressure, as low pressure can cause calibration failures

  4. Test the PWM solenoid valve resistance and wiring for open circuits or shorts

  5. If electrical components are fine, inspect for a mechanical fault within the transmission, such as a faulty synchronizer or damaged clutch pack

Repair steps

  1. Inspect and Test the PWM Valve

Locate the transmission control valve block. Test the PWM solenoid valve responsible for the clutch being calibrated.

  2. Replace Faulty Solenoid

If the PWM valve is found to be faulty (e.g., out of resistance spec or mechanically stuck), replace it with a new OEM solenoid.

  3. Address Mechanical Faults

If the PWM valve is functioning correctly and hydraulic pressure is normal, the transmission will require internal mechanical diagnosis to repair the sticky/faulty synchronizer or clutch pack.

  4. Clear the Code

Once the underlying cause has been rectified, you must clear the U37 error code from the system.

  5. Recalibrate

Repeat the transmission auto-calibration procedure and test the system for normal operation.
